The Green Center for Sustainable Finance and Energy Holds Final Green Talks Strategic Meeting for the Year
„I am delighted that Green Talks has established itself as an initiative with real added value for participating companies and the wider Green Center community. The opportunity to delve into real-life cases with empirically proven, long-term solutions highlights the sustainable progress of Bulgarian businesses in their key sectors. In many cases, it positions Bulgarian companies among Europe’s ESG pioneers. I believe the next edition of Green Talks will be just as impactful, and I look forward to resuming these meetings at the start of the new year.“ said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Manyu Moravenov, Chair of the Green Center.
Representatives from the National Electric Company (NEK EAD), ENERY, and Aurubis Bulgaria AD participated in this concluding session. NEK EAD focused its presentation on good corporate governance aligned with OECD standards, which enables the company to operate in accordance with global best practices. NEK EAD’s social initiatives were also highlighted as a key factor in the company’s sustainable growth, encompassing responsibility toward nature and long-term corporate development. NEK EAD representatives shared specific solutions implemented in their projects, such as the modernization of pumped-storage hydropower plants and hydropower plants, development of new and existing facilities, biodiversity preservation efforts, and a successful model for gender equality in company management.
ENERY presented their energy projects across 12 European countries, encompassing solar, wind, and hydroelectric plants. Participants gained detailed insights into the concept of long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), which provide energy consumers with cost predictability and a guaranteed reduction in their carbon footprint. ENERY showcased successful projects in Bulgaria and cross-border initiatives supplying Romanian consumers with energy generated from their Bulgarian facilities. The company also emphasized its social policies, including engagement with local communities and support for rehabilitating municipal social infrastructure.
Aurubis Bulgaria AD concluded the presentations by sharing their progress in managing operations amidst growing regulatory demands and their readiness to release their first group-level report under the CSRD Directive and ESRS standards. Acknowledging the direct carbon footprint of the metallurgy industry, Aurubis Bulgaria AD has been pursuing a carbon neutrality program since 2018, aiming to achieve this goal by 2050. As part of this effort, the company has implemented an in-house photovoltaic park system at its production complex in Bulgaria, with plans for further expansion in the coming years. Optimization of the production complex, slated for completion in 2027, is another priority, aimed at reducing reliance on high-emission fuels.
The event concluded with insights from Boyan Rashev of EY denkstatt, who shared practical advice on sustainability reporting and provided valuable guidance for companies preparing their first annual sustainability reports.
